Window group in View tab

description

Hello.

Here is a post I created to gather ideas about a new "Window" group that could be created since our beloved developpers added the Multiple Window feature.

Idea 1. "Window" group
Create a new group called "Window" that would contain other icons such as the following ones :

Idea 2. "New Window" button
In this discussion : http://bexplorer.codeplex.com/discussions/358419
... dwcode asked if it's possible to move the "New Window" button into the View tab.

Idea 3. "Three icons for arranging windows"
Finally next to the "New Window" icon, there could be, as three small icons :

Okay, moving "New Window" to the View tab will not be an issue at all.

Dimitar says that he can work on the tiling/re-arranging windows commands, so we will try to have that done sometime soon.

woohoo.. good news. I can't wait to test these new buttons.

I should talk to Dimitar again about it. I'm sure he didn't forget about it, but I just want to make sure we make it happen.

I personally have no idea how to get the tiling and stuff to work, so that's all his responsibility.

I will talk to Dimitar. He says he already knows how to do this.

I talked to Dimitar, and he said that while we have the capability to do that, actually making the code will be hard. Using what's already included in BetterExplorer, we can get all of the open windows and manipulate them (to an extent), but the problem is finding out which window is another BetterExplorer window.

Anyway, it will be something we'll work on, in the future, but I'm not sure when it will be added in. Meanwhile, these buttons are just a convenience, and re-arranging windows will still be easy, especially on Windows 7 with the Aero Snap feature.

I noticed that the "New Window" in the File tab is still there (Build 92058).

Have you planned to remove it or to let it there too ? (just wondering)

I have decided to leave it there too.

My reason being is this: in the Ribbon guidelines, you aren't technically supposed to place commands in two places, because if there is a command that is in two spots, one that is supposed to be easier to reach than the other, and if the user is searching for that command and comes across the not-as-easy-to-reach spot, they will assume that's the only place it is and use that same method to get to that command from now on, even if there was an easier way to get to that command.

However, the New Window button is on the View tab and the File tab, and a user is just as likely to find it on the View tab as they will on the File tab, and neither location is more difficult to reach than the other, so I think it would rather be to my advantage to keep it in both spots, because that way, no matter what, the user will find that command, and find it very easily, and they'll almost-100% figure out it is in the other spot as well, which will be just as easy to reach.

I think it would be more logical to have only one "New Window" button in the View Tab. Users will get used to it there. And as you said, this place is not more difficult to reach.

I just think it's strange to have a command button in the File tab..

The project has entirely moved to GitHub.

BettereExplorer on CodePlex will be abandonned soon or later...
No more updates will be added here.
